Why mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a widely used term today. You may have heard about it in connection with yoga, around the topic of mental health or in relation to food and diet. To be mindful is to be aware, to pay more attention to the present moment – to your own thoughts and feelings, and to the world around you. It’s been practised by human beings all over the world for thousands of years and has its strongest roots in Buddhism and Hinduism. The philosophy of Mindfulness has become very popular in the Western world. It is used in the ‘Positive Psychology Study’ and other types of therapies as it is proven to be extremely effective against anxiety disorders and depression.

It is pretty safe to say that Mindfulness is here to stay. In fact, we are in desperate need of it, especially in this day and age. Looking at society, we can see that we have never been more disconnected than we are today. Social media seem to be the way to stay connected with family and friends yet it leaves us with a feeling of emptiness. The more plugged into things we get, the more disconnected we become from nature. Times are changing and if you are old enough, you may have grown up without a mobile phone. Life was very different back then. People would spend more time together and devote more time to interact with nature, be it a walk in the woods or simply gardening.

What about now? Well it depends, but for many of us who live in cities, we are not very likely to connect with nature as much as we used to and are meant to in order to feel grounded. We live most of our lives locked in to our heads.

However, we are not here to tell you what’s wrong with the world. We want to focus on how to reconnect with our body, mind as well as nature. We want to show you how to practise mindfulness no matter where you are in the world, whether it’s London or somewhere else.

Remember this, as so exquisitely said by a Master of Words:

“Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world.

Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.” - Rumi

So what does mindfulness mean to us?

Both of us recently embarked on this journey– one that will hopefully teach us how to live life with an open heart and open mind, whilst constantly learning new things and evolving.

Living in a city like London can easily cause discontentment, a feeling like you are not good enough.

This is obviously a delusion of the mind and the ego, yet we, and probably so many others, find ourselves in this place of unhappiness. To us, the word mindfulness is simply a word that symbolises taking control of your mind and making a conscious choice to live a happy and fulfilled life. No matter how you decide to do so, that is mindfulness.
